Let’s block Skype and Bittorrent

This is a really good article explaining why ISP’s and operators most of the times don’t think about the consequences of packet inspection (DPI). False positives are very bad for business.

My view is that a lot of the more onerous terms-of-service for broadband (fixed or wireless), or heavy-handed traffic shaping, are going to evaporate under commercial & PR pressure over the next year or so. And I’m expecting quite a lot of Comcast-type attempts to be outed by people monitoring traffic flows and reverse-engineering what’s causing problems.

As I’ve said before – I can’t get especially exercised about Net Neutrality. Because anyone stupid enough to block benign traffic (even if they don’t like it for commercial reasons) is going to heavily burnt. I think the market will understand providers wanting to stop network integrity being threatened – but it will show zero tolerance for vindictive or accidental ‘collateral damage’.

Skype Protocol has been cracked?

Wow, someone is saying that it has been done by a chinese company. The application code of Skype Protocol will be offered for license by the end of July. If this is true, I think eBay will face trouble:

This could also have a terrible effect on eBay should they choose to leverage their Skype client to host advertisements. Now that there is the prospect of a competing client available there is little doubt that there will be an ad free alternative to Skype should advertisements on Skype appear in the future.

From a legal standpoint eBay is out of luck. First, Skype itself is not viewed as “legal” in China. Chinese regulatory authorities have even looked into ways to block Skype in various regions of China. The Chinese telecom giants are not at all pleased with Skype stealing IDD revenue from their pockets. They will enthusiastically support a domestic Chinese company with the engineering talent to reverse engineer Skype. I wouldn’t be surprised if a major Chinese telco ends up licensing this technology to produce a competing Skype client for use in China.

Project Gizmo

Estou a instalar um Skype-like App, mas que funciona com SIP, o Project Gizmo. A versão para Mac é bonitinha. A quem interessar, o meu Gzimo ID é vonfreud e o SIP number é o 17476037955. E aí está, reparei logo na vantagem do Skype sobre o resto, o facto de usar TCP permitia-me utilizar aplicação na VPN da empresa onde trabalho (firewalls & acls are evil). Com o SIP do Gizmo, no can do.

Sapo Messenger suporta VoIP

A Netcabo (ainda) não aderiu ao VoIP por razões de política interna da PT, mas o Sapo Messenger já tem Áudio e Vídeo. Funciona com protocolos standard (SIP et all) ou é proprietário? Mais um concorrente ao Skype? No futuro, poderá vir a ter ligação ao PSTN? Tem crypto? E cliente para Mac, nunca terá? :)

Skype Meetings

Pertenço a uma associação em que foi agendada uma reunião para as 22h00 a 130km de onde estou físicamente. Normalmente diria que não podia ir ou sugeria que fosse adiada para outro dia. Já não é necessário. Tanto em minha casa como no lugar da reunião existe uma ligação à Internet com uma velocidade de upstream suficiente para corrermos uma aplicação de VoIP sem problemas. De um lado, o meu iBook, do outro um PowerBook. A primeira idéia foi usar o iChat, pela qualidade de voz e facilidade na comunicação. No entanto, optamos por usar Skype porque a qualidade de voz era melhor do que a do iChat. Da última vez que experimentei o Skype em Mac, a qualidade de voz era sofrível e tinha instabilidade na rede. A reunião durou mais de uma hora e eu conseguia ouvir perfeitamente as 6 pessoas do outro lado e elas ouviam-me perfeitamente. A ligação do Skype durou a reunião toda, sem falhas. Se o microfone estivesse mesmo no centro da mesa e fosse bi-direcional, tinha sido perfeito. Se o Skype com suporte a Video não for apenas hype, era a cereja no bolo para ter uma solução portátil de VideoConferência/Reuniões para várias plataformas (uma coisa que o iChat já faz apenas para Mac). O mais interessante, é que podia estar a 130km, no Brasil, Estados Unidos ou Japão e muito provávelmente a experiência seria igual. O VoIP é muito mais que fazer chamadas pela Internet de borla, ou mais baratas. É a presença e a qualidade da voz que faz a diferença. Ainda não faz muito tempo em que as soluções de videoconferência vendidas pelas Telcos eram extremamente caras, se imaginarmos o que é era os custos de comunicação de uma sala em Tokyo a falar com outra em Londres. Agora é para as massas. Basta um download do Skype, iChat ou outro software e um bom microfone e talvez uma câmara. Welcome to the Revolution.

Já que o Skype P2P VOIP Protocol foi reverse-engineered, que tal fazer uma biblioteca para o gaim e automágicamente uma série de IM Clients passarem a suportar Skype? Integração, integração. O problema são os Codecs (iLBC, que é um standard do IETF mas o iSAC parece ser proprietário) de uma tal de GlobalIPSound. Watch Pulver Communicator.
